UNITED MISSION FOR RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT

UMR Mobilizes Emergency Relief for Lebanon’s Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

Lebanon is experiencing a severe crisis as ongoing conflicts devastate communities across the country. Since October 2023, hundreds of civilians have been killed, with 2,566 casualties reported. More than 113,000 people have been displaced from South Lebanon, and thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed (OCHA).

Lebanon is also home to 1.5 million displaced Syrians and nearly 500,000 Palestinian refugees, making it one of the largest hosts for refugees. The ongoing conflict has left around 700,000 children out of school (UNHCR). In response, UMR is launching emergency relief efforts, focusing on helping the most vulnerable, including displaced families, women, and children.

UMR’s Emergency Response:

UMR is providing lifesaving help to families in urgent need by delivering medical kits, food aid, and shelter supplies.

  • $12,500 sponsors a medical emergency kit for three months, helping 10,000 patients.
  • $140/month provides food aid to a household, ensuring access to nutritious meals.
  • $200 covers non-food items (NFIs), like shelter supplies, to help displaced families stay safe and maintain dignity.

Your donations will directly support families displaced by violence, including those in overcrowded shelters or temporary housing. Together, we can provide essential relief to those affected by this crisis.

In 2024, Yemen experienced severe flooding that affected 19 governorates, impacting over 400,000 people and severely disrupting the lives of 63,195 households. The floods, which took place from April to August, added to Yemen’s ongoing humanitarian struggles, particularly in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The hardest-hit areas include Hajjah, Al Hudaydah, Marib, Taiz, Sa’adah, Al Jawf, and Dhamar, where homes, farms, and essential infrastructure were destroyed, increasing the vulnerability of already displaced communities.

The Impact

  • Infrastructure Damage: The floods destroyed more than 17,093 shelters and homes and caused extensive damage to schools and health centers, including key hospitals like Al Thawrah in Al Hudaydah. This has left many without shelter, disrupted education, and put additional strain on an already fragile healthcare system.

  • Health Crisis: Contaminated water sources have led to a rise in cholera and other waterborne diseases, especially in overcrowded IDP camps. Children under five are particularly at risk as suspected cholera cases surge.

  • Food Security: The flooding wiped out farmland and livestock, threatening food security and leaving many families without their primary source of income. This has increased dependence on humanitarian aid, particularly in the worst-affected regions.

  • Education Disruption: With over 2 million children already out of school, the floods have worsened the education crisis. The destruction of schools and economic hardship has forced many families to focus on survival, putting education on hold.

UMR’s Response and Call to Action

UMR, working with partners, has been at the forefront of responding to this disaster. Efforts include distributing essential non-food items, hygiene kits, food parcels, and providing emergency health services at five centers managed by UMR. Despite the ongoing conflict and damaged infrastructure, UMR is dedicated to delivering critical aid to the people who need it most.

Washington, DC, October 25, 2023 – The ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip has taken a devastating toll on the lives of civilians where fuel, food, water, medicine, safe shelter, electricity, and other basic necessities for survival are unavailable or running low. The immediate emergency response requires all aid organizations to coordinate their efforts in order to maximize resources. It is in this background that UMR today signed an agreement with UNRWA USA to support the to humanitarian appeal in Gaza released on October 19, 2023 by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

UMR has been actively participating in the humanitarian appeals and response to address the desperate and unbearable situation faced by civilians in the Gaza crisis. UMR has joined forces and will support UNRWA’s overarching appeal, which aims to raise $104 million USD for humanitarian response over the next 90 days. These funds are crucial in addressing the immediate needs of the affected population, first and foremost fuel, in addition to food, shelter, health services, medicine and electricity.

Amid the current situation, hundreds of thousands of displaced people are sheltering inside UNRWA schools and facilities where thousands of UNRWA staff, the majority of whom are refugees themselves, are delivering humanitarian assistance.

UMR’s appeals shall support UNRWA’s massive efforts to assist hundreds of thousands of individuals needing urgent shelter in Gaza, as well as many thousands more whose family, homes, and livelihoods have been disrupted.

“The humanitarian task in Gaza is enormous and overwhelming. Aid agencies need to work together to bring immediate relief as we plan for the long term rehabilitation of lives, family, and livelihood for the population. Our support for UNRWA I am sure will go a long way as they have been supporting the population for seven decades now,” commented Dr. Abed Ayoub, President and CEO, UMR.

UMR Mobilizes Humanitarian Relief for Gaza

Collaborates with global agencies and partners to deliver urgent aid

The recent crisis in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating as the concern for access and delivery of emergency humanitarian aid steadily mounts due to restrictions and blockades. Notwithstanding the difficult logistic challenges, United Mission for Relief and Development (UMR) has intensified its commitment to delivering essential life-sustaining aid to the most affected population. UMR is actively providing on the ground life-saving support by leveraging its strategic partnerships and establishing alternative distribution methods.

UMR acknowledges the complexities imposed by the current restrictions in Gaza and has established a robust strategy utilizing the influence and network of the Hashemite Charity Organization, an array of local community-based organizations (CBOs) as well as the United Nations. This collaborative approach ensures the successful procurement, distribution and delivery of critical supplies, circumventing traditional barriers that have hindered numerous relief efforts.

“We understand that the challenges in Gaza are multifaceted and require a dynamic, collaborative approach. Our partnerships are invaluable in navigating these complexities on the ground. Together, we’re not just delivering aid but saving lives and providing hope,” commented Dr. Abed Ayoub, CEO and President, UMR.

Partnering with the Hashemite Charity Organization, UMR will hand over pharmaceutical supplies and equipment capable of serving over 100,000 medical cases in Gaza. This is valued at over $1,000000.

Additionally, UMR is procuring tents, clothing and other essential items which will be delivered to Gaza through UMR’s association with the Hashemite Charity Organization. These items are crucial in providing immediate shelter and comfort to the millions who would be displaced by the conflict or facing severe economic hardship.

UMR is also engaging and negotiating with UNRWA on ways it can support and expand UNRWA’s operations and programs for those severely affected by the crisis.

UMR is part of a coalition of Aid NGOs that includes Rahmah Worldwide, International Humanitarian Relief, Pious Project, Medglobal, and the Palestine Tomorrow Association. This coalition is focused on fortifying ER clinics in Gaza, an urgent need given the enormity of deaths and injuries. This coalition is also mandated to procure medicines, support operational capacities, and distribute food to injured individuals and their families amidst the crisis.

While UMR will do all that it can to alleviate the suffering and reduce the pain, the need is enormous. UMR calls on the international community to recognize the gravity of the situation in Gaza and encourage other humanitarian organizations to contribute to the relief efforts through direct participation or support the initiatives currently being undertaken.

Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Rateb al-Nabulsi speaks on the devastating aftermath of the 7.8 magnitude that slammed Türkiye and Syria and just how crucial humanitarian aid is at this time, especially for the often-forgotten Syrian refugees in Ghaziantep

Both Syria and Türkiye have declared a state of emergency after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the two countries early Monday morning.

At least 11,500 people are dead, more than 50,000 people are injured, and at least 11,000 buildings were destroyed. The death toll is expected to rise sharply as rescue workers continue to search for survivors in the rubble.

This comes at the worst possible time as it is the middle of winter in Syria and Türkiye. Hundreds of thousands of people will now be struggling to survive without access to food, medical care, or protection from freezing temperatures.

UMR is responding in the form of food baskets, winter care kits, emergency health kits for households, and Interagency Emergency Health Kits for hospitals and medical clinics.

To reiterate, in a disaster of this proportion, any donation will make a difference in the lives of individuals who lost everything.

UMR CEO and President Dr. Abed Ayoub spoke about the devastating earthquake, “UMR currently is working with international communities teams on the ground, which are also providing emergency aid, as we look to see what the other major needs are. Our resources are heading to the areas most heavily affected by the earthquake yesterday, where huge numbers of houses, markets, and hospitals have been destroyed and the food supply is dwindling. This means international aid is more important now than ever.”

The main needs include access to clean water, food, and shelter, particularly for women, children, and other vulnerable communities. UMR is responding in the form of emergency aid including food baskets, essential winter items, shelter, water and sanitation, and other core relief items.

Dr.Ayoub adds, “At the moment, aid agencies are obviously operating in an even more challenging environment.” UMR has been working in responding to emergencies around the globe for many years, helping communities prepare for disasters, and providing emergency relief and recovery when disaster strikes. UMR has ongoing programs across the region and has access to areas including the areas affected by the earthquake. UMR has activated its emergency response protocol and has assessment and response teams on the ground assisting in coordination with partner organizations and local government units.

In Somalia, poverty, armed conflict, political instability and natural disasters continue to drive humanitarian needs. Diminishing water sources caused livestock to perish and crops to wither and die, further deteriorating cases of malnutrition, dehydration and starvation. The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance reached 5 million, which is more than 40% of the entire population. Over 1.1 million people are internally displaced, and Somalia remains one of the poorest and most food-deprived nations in the world.

UMR launched a project to provide immediate assistance to drought-affected IDPs and host communities in and around Mogadishu and Luug District, Gedu region. The scheme enabled people to access food as they waited for additional humanitarian interventions. The project helped feed 3,000 beneficiaries. UMR used World Food Program’s (WFP) support to improve food security through the SCOPE approach. This project targeted the most vulnerable IDPs passing through or staying in the region. It also registered beneficiaries from the IDP camp as well vulnerable households. The targeted beneficiaries received family/household rations equivalent to the ones delivered by WFP and recommended by the Somalia Food Security Cluster. The quota included 25kgs of rice, 25kgs of sugar, 5 liters of cooking oil, 2kgs of tea leaves and 5kgs of powdered milk.
