UMR Mobilizes Humanitarian Relief for Gaza

Collaborates with global agencies and partners to deliver urgent aid

The recent crisis in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating as the concern for access and delivery of emergency humanitarian aid steadily mounts due to restrictions and blockades. Notwithstanding the difficult logistic challenges, United Mission for Relief and Development (UMR) has intensified its commitment to delivering essential life-sustaining aid to the most affected population. UMR is actively providing on the ground life-saving support by leveraging its strategic partnerships and establishing alternative distribution methods.

UMR acknowledges the complexities imposed by the current restrictions in Gaza and has established a robust strategy utilizing the influence and network of the Hashemite Charity Organization, an array of local community-based organizations (CBOs) as well as the United Nations. This collaborative approach ensures the successful procurement, distribution and delivery of critical supplies, circumventing traditional barriers that have hindered numerous relief efforts.

“We understand that the challenges in Gaza are multifaceted and require a dynamic, collaborative approach. Our partnerships are invaluable in navigating these complexities on the ground. Together, we’re not just delivering aid but saving lives and providing hope,” commented Dr. Abed Ayoub, CEO and President, UMR.

Partnering with the Hashemite Charity Organization, UMR will hand over pharmaceutical supplies and equipment capable of serving over 100,000 medical cases in Gaza. This is valued at over $1,000000.

Additionally, UMR is procuring tents, clothing and other essential items which will be delivered to Gaza through UMR’s association with the Hashemite Charity Organization. These items are crucial in providing immediate shelter and comfort to the millions who would be displaced by the conflict or facing severe economic hardship.

UMR is also engaging and negotiating with UNRWA on ways it can support and expand UNRWA’s operations and programs for those severely affected by the crisis.

UMR is part of a coalition of Aid NGOs that includes Rahmah Worldwide, International Humanitarian Relief, Pious Project, Medglobal, and the Palestine Tomorrow Association. This coalition is focused on fortifying ER clinics in Gaza, an urgent need given the enormity of deaths and injuries. This coalition is also mandated to procure medicines, support operational capacities, and distribute food to injured individuals and their families amidst the crisis.

While UMR will do all that it can to alleviate the suffering and reduce the pain, the need is enormous. UMR calls on the international community to recognize the gravity of the situation in Gaza and encourage other humanitarian organizations to contribute to the relief efforts through direct participation or support the initiatives currently being undertaken.

This article sheds light on the current state of Palestine and outlines potential solutions for this situation. So, how can you help Palestine?

The Situation in Palestine

Palestine is a land marred by decades of war and political instability. It is facing an escalating humanitarian crisis today. The Palestinian people face problems every day, such as

  • limited access to clean water,
  • bad medical services,
  • not enough food, and
  • the loss of important buildings like schools and hospitals.

These have made the Palestine Crisis even worse. Violence and displacement are still ongoing. It is hard on people’s mental and emotional health. This is especially true for children who are seeing loved ones die and their towns get destroyed.

Finding Solutions

Getting out of the crisis in Palestine will take a multifaceted plan that looks at both short-term relief and long-term solutions. Here are some important things that need attention:

Emergency Aid and Relief

How Can We Help?

Individuals can play a significant role in supporting the Palestinian people, even from afar. Here are some ways ordinary people can contribute:

Donations

Contributing to reputable organizations that specialize in Palestine aid, such as UMR, can have a direct impact. Your donations can help initiatives like the “Palestine Medical Supplies” campaign or general relief efforts.

Fundraising

Palestinians in Gaza recall an era when nearly everyone had access to clean water from the pipe. The water crisis in Gaza is increasing day by day.

Today, less than 4% of freshwater is safe to drink. Sewage pollution has contaminated the sea nearby. However, the global community is not doing enough to safeguard the health and dignity of nearly 2 million individuals who are without a place to go. Gaza water pollution

Emergency Crisis

Gaza has long struggled with access to clean water and sanitary facilities. But now an emergency exists there. Its twofold water issue entails both a lack of sewage sanitation and a shortage of drinkable water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. As a result, Gaza regularly discharges approximately 108,000 cubic meters of untreated sewage into the Mediterranean Sea, posing serious risks to the public’s health in Gaza, Israel, and Egypt.

Even though these problems have been around for a long time, the water crisis and health worries about drinking water have gotten worse.

There are many reasons for this, such as :

  • Infrastructure is breaking down quickly
  • Strict import restrictions on building materials and water pumps
  • The energy supply is unstable and getting less

The restoration of Gaza’s water and sanitation sectors has been further hampered by wars between Israel and Hamas since 2009 and an internal Palestinian conflict between Hamas and Fatah.

Causes of the Water Crisis

War is the main cause of  Gaza water pollution. Gaza water distribution supply has been greatly disrupted by the Israeli-Palestinian war. The main water sources in the area, including the Jordan River and the Coastal Aquifer, are under Israel’s authority. Israel limits the amount of clean water that is accessible to Palestinians by limiting the amount of water allotted to Gaza. It has affected the people of Gaza in many ways. Here are some of the destructions which break the water system in Gaza completely –

Collapsed Infrastructure

Gaza’s water system has been in bad shape for years. Because :

  • Years of neglect
  • Inadequate maintenance
  • Damage caused by wars

The aging infrastructure is prone to leaks, inefficiencies, and frequent breakdowns. It results in significant water losses. The deteriorating infrastructure further limits the availability and accessibility of clean water for the population.

Import Bans On Materials

The restrictions on what Gaza can import, especially building materials, make it very hard to build and keep up good water facilities. This includes putting limits on the import of pipes, pumps, and other tools needed for water and sewage systems. Because there aren’t enough of these important materials, it’s hard to build new infrastructure and fix the damage, which makes the water problem worse.

Insufficient Energy Supply

Gaza depends on energy a lot to run water pumps, desalination plants, and facilities that clean up waste water. But Gaza’s energy supply is very irregular because of things like

  • Fuel shortages
  • Limited access to electricity
  • Damage to power facilities caused by wars

When there isn’t enough energy, water facilities can’t work properly. This makes it harder to make, treat, and distribute clean water, which makes the water problem worse.

Impact Of Water Crisis In Gaza

The impact of water crisis in Gaza is greater than anyone’s imagination. Here are some of the key effects:

Limited Access to Clean Water

Gaza’s population faces severe challenges in accessing sufficient quantities of safe and clean water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. Due to water scarcity, households often receive water for only a few hours every few days, leading to rationing and difficulties in meeting basic needs.

Health and Hygiene Challenges

Inadequate access to clean water and poor sanitation facilities contribute to numerous health risks. Contaminated water sources and the lack of proper wastewater treatment systems increase the spread of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. Limited water availability also hampers proper hygiene practices. It leads to poor sanitation and an increased risk of infections and illnesses.

Impact on Agriculture and Food Security

The water crisis has had a significant impact on agricultural activities and food production in Gaza. Limited water resources restrict irrigation for crops, negatively affecting agricultural productivity. Farmers face difficulties in growing crops, resulting in reduced yields and lower-quality produce. This situation jeopardizes food security for the population, leading to increased dependence on food aid and imports.

Economic Consequences

The water Palestine crisis imposes economic burdens on individuals and communities. As water becomes scarce, the cost of purchasing water from alternative sources increases, putting financial strain on households already facing economic challenges. Additionally, the limited availability of water restricts economic activities such as small-scale industries, hampering job opportunities and economic development.

Gender Disparities and Burden

Women and girls in Gaza bear a disproportionate burden due to the water crisis. In many households, women are primarily responsible for collecting and managing water. The scarcity of water in Gaza is impacting the women greatly..

Humanitarian Efforts and International Response

There hasn’t been much international financing to support immediate humanitarian initiatives, complete reconstruction, and revive the private sector economy. This covers medium- to long-term infrastructure initiatives in the fields of public health, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and energy.

A $244 million financing shortfall was mentioned as a hindrance to the 2014 war’s reconstruction, which included harm to homes, hospitals, and water and energy infrastructure. After the conflict, international donors pledged $3.5 billion for rehabilitation, but only $1.5 billion has actually been paid out. This illustration brings to light one of the most difficult financing issues surrounding Gaza: a lack of donor follow-through. Furthermore, less than half of the $547 million Humanitarian Response Plan for the Palestinian Territories for 2017, which is primarily focused on Gaza, has been allocated. The WASH component is notably underfunded in Gaza.

United Mission for Relief & Development (UMR) has been working hard to solve the water problem in Gaza. They have worked on many water relief projects to help the Palestinian people and find long-term answers to their problems. Their work includes giving out emergency water supplies when there is a severe lack of water, putting in place systems to clean water in communities, and fixing up water facilities.

UMR also works on education and awareness programmes to teach people how to save water, practise good hygiene, and understand how important it is to manage water in a sustainable way. They with local partners are still fighiting to find long-term solutions to Gaza’s water problem. Your donation will help them to assure safe water for the people of Gaza.

Potential Solutions and Future Outlook

Gaza water crisis solutions are not impossible but hard to implement. Here are some of the possible solutions for the water crisis in Gaza –

  1. Increase the quantity and consistency of Gaza’s electricity supply through various investments and infrastructure improvements.
  2. Advance the “161kV Line” project to enhance the transmission of electricity to and within Gaza.
  3. Upgrade and expand the electricity transmission network in Gaza to ensure efficient distribution.
  4. Restore the fuel storage tank at the Gaza Power Plant and connect it to a natural gas pipeline to improve the power generation capacity.
  5. Invest in solar energy to diversify the energy sources and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
  6. Explore the development of the Gaza Marine gas field to enhance the availability of natural gas for power generation.
  7. Increase the supply of purchased power from Egypt to augment the electricity supply in Gaza.
  8. Ensure a consistent supply of electricity for the Khan Yunis Short-Term Low-Volume desalination plant, enabling continuous water production.
  9. Improve fee collection mechanisms to cover the ongoing cost of electricity and support sustainable operations.
  10. Investing in new solar energy initiatives could increase the resilience of crucial infrastructure.

Gaza Needs Help

To implement the solutions mentioned above, Gaza needs a tremendous amount of funding from all over the world. We all should come forward and help to solve the water crisis in Gaza. Donate to international organizations working for Palestine like UMR. One small donation will impact greatly on the lives of the people in Gaza.

United Mission for Relief and Development (UMR) partners with MedGlobal for Palestine relief. It is a humanitarian organization that serves vulnerable people worldwide. MedGlobal provides free healthcare to refugees, displaced persons, and marginalized communities.

The Turmoil in Palestine:

(According to WFP) 32.7 percent of the population lacked access to a healthy diet. Women are more likely than males to experience food insecurity. 33.7 percent of women heading families reported food scarcity. The situation is more accurate in the Gaza strip, with 64 percent food insecurity.

Palestinians are extremely food insecure. They experience a large consumption gap and lack the resources. These gaps come from the lack of their fundamental requirements. such as food, housing, and clothes. Due to the continuous and protracted crisis, they have already used up most of their coping methods. Which leaves them unable to close the enormous consumption gap.

Years and years of  violence have left people of Palestine in a devastating situation. Palestine continues to face significant obstacles –

  • A protracted conflict
  • Economic stagnation
  • Trade restrictions, and
  • Limited access to resources.

These obstacles bar them from achieving sustainable developments. Among these developments are ending hunger, ensuring food security, and improving nutrition.

Focus of Partnership:

The partnership focuses on facility-based healthcare services in Gaza. UMR and MedGlobal coordinate with the Ministry of Health to deploy healthcare professionals. This partnership aligns with UMR’s mission to address the dire healthcare needs in Gaza.

Approximately 1.5 million people in Gaza lack consistent access to healthcare. As a result, health benchmarks are deteriorating. 80% of Gazans are below the poverty line. Our objectives are to improve the health of the Palestinian people in Gaza and their quality of life. The nature of Palestine relief in Gaza comes in three categories:

1) Lack of protection and displacement;

2) Limited access to essential services; and

3) Erosion of resilience and preparedness.

Sufferings of people in Palestine:

As it stands, 55.7% of elderly patients in Gaza suffer from three or more diseases. Additionally, one-third of older individuals need access to healthcare services. The UMR and MedGlobal partnership expands healthcare and medical service outreach.

About UMR and MedGlobal:

UMR is a registered 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Its headquarter is in Washington, DC. The organization provides disaster relief and recovery services worldwide.

MedGlobal is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It focuses on providing life-saving care. The organization deploys local partners and medical providers with training and supplying hospitals.

UMR and MedGlobal aim to provide sustainable development as a Palestine relief program. Our prerogative is to make sure the civilians get proper access to healthcare and medical services.

One of the best ways to help people get out of poverty is to treat blindness and deafness. Because some of them can be prevented, like cataracts and bad vision. This is especially true for vulnerable groups like refugees living in temporary housing. UMR has launched a cataract & hearing aid mission for helping them.

Cataract Missions – Life with Blindness

Cataract accounts for 30%-50% of blindness in most African and Asian countries. In impoverished countries, eliminating blindness and repairing vision returns four times the investment. This places eliminating avoidable blindness among the most effective interventions available. Cataract surgeries are life-changing and require no follow-up visits.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Cataracts are the primary cause of blindness and visual impairment. It has about 20 million cases and 5 million new cases each year.”

Life With Hearing Loss and Deafness

Loss of hearing can happen for many reasons. Such as –

  • Genetic Causes,
  • Complications At Birth,
  • Certain Infectious Diseases,
  • Chronic Ear Infections,
  • The Use Of Particular Drugs,
  • Exposure To Excessive Noise, and
  • Aging.

Loss of hearing means that you can’t hear as well as someone with normal hearing. It means that your hearing level is at least 25 dB in both ears. Loss of hearing can happen in one or both ears. This makes it hard to understand words or hear loud noises.

Life With Hearing Loss and Deafness

Hard of hearing means hearing loss ranging from mild to severe. Hard-of-hearing people communicate using :

  • Spoken language,
  • Hearing aids,
  • Cochlear implants, and
  • Other equipment.

Deafness is profound hearing loss. It implies very little or no hearing in an individual. They often use sign language for communication.

  • 60% of hearing loss is because of preventable causes, in children under the age of 15.
  • 1.1 billion individuals are at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to high noise. High risk for ages between 12–35 years.
  • Over one-third of people over 65 years of age are affected by disabling hearing loss. Greater prevalence in South Asia, Asia Pacific and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The current production of hearing aids meets less than 10% of the worldwide need.

UMR Interventions

Since 2016, UMR has sent cataract surgery missions to Kenya, Jordan, and Bangladesh. UMR provides quality medical care to the elderly, disabled, refugees, and vulnerable. Many of them live without family or government support. We have helped them by healing curable blindness. Our kind contributors have funded over 1,000 cataract procedures. In this process, we have collaborated with partner NGOs and Ministries of Health. Our $100-per-eye operations are 100% successful with no problems.

Hearing Aid in Palestine/Jordan

UMR partnered with Community Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled/Gaza camp (CRCD) – UNRWA. Our aim is to integrate disabled people into their communities. Also, we are trying to improve their living conditions. The center assisted UMR with its local program team and project need assessment. Phonak Jordan performed all medical exams, measurements, and modeling before distributing the hearing devices and gave UMR a considerable discount. It offered 2 years of device maintenance and monitoring in Jordan.

UMR’s Hearing Aid project helps Palestinian refugees in Gaza/Jerash camp and Syrian refugees in random camps in Al-Mafraq. We have helped people with no health benefits and social security numbers.

Lastly

When thousands of people in a community suffer from health issues, it can be nearly impossible for a society to grow and become self-sustainable. At UMR, we believe that in order to improve the quality of life in a community, everyone must have access to primary healthcare. That’s why we have launched this cataract & hearing aid mission.

As we continue our mission to help beneficiaries, we will be providing free cataract surgeries and hearing aids to as many people as possible.
