UMR Kilimanjaro Climb!

Dear Humanitarian

Assalaam Alaikum,

I hope this message finds you in good health and spirits, and that your 2024 has been both rewarding and successful, inshallah. I am seeking your support for the UMR Team that is climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise awareness and urgent funds for millions affected in Sudan.

The recent conflict in Sudan has created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Over 18 million people have been displaced and are facing severe hunger, illness, and disease. Casualties are rising by the hour. The health sector has almost collapsed, leading to a significant increase in untreated chronic illnesses. With more than 17 million individuals lacking access to essential medical services and basic nutrition, the situation is critical.

UMR is currently providing medical kits and supplies to treat more than 50,000 people per month while also providing meals to thousands of households. UMR is working directly and through our partners to deliver 1.7 million meals and supply healthcare facilities. The need is enormous and your help to expand our work in Sudan is urgent.

UMR’s team of 20 climbers includes UMR COO, Mr. Muhieldin Salih, and the UMR Kenya Board Members. They will begin their climb on January 5, 2025 with the hope to reach the summit on January 10th. By January 12th the team is expected to be back safely at basecamp, inshallah.

While the climb is difficult and dangerous and lasts for nine long days, it pales in comparison to the daily hardship of our Sudanese brothers and sisters. They have endured years of worsening conditions and unimaginable suffering, hunger, sickness and death. The climb was developed to highlight the plight of the Sudanese people and to bring the urgent support they so critically need.

Through this tough and challenging climb of Kilimanjaro we hope to inspire you to join us on our mission in Sudan. I appeal for your support and donation on behalf of the millions of unfortunate and suffering Sudanese. They depend on donors like you.

We encourage you to consider becoming a Silver ($75,000), Gold ($100,000) or Platinum ($150,000) Sponsor to make your gift go as far as possible, reaching the most vulnerable families in Sudan.

As we enter a new year, I pray for your health and prosperity. May 2025 bring you peace, success and barakah in all that you undertake, ameen.

Jazakhallah Khair

As of August 2024, Sudan is grappling with a catastrophic humanitarian crisis fueled by intense conflict and civil unrest. The war-torn nation has witnessed over 10 million people displaced from their homes, facing hunger, sickness, and disease. Amidst this chaos, a deadly cholera outbreak has further compounded the suffering of the Sudanese people, posing a significant threat to public health and survival.

The Current Situation: A Nation in Crisis

Sudan’s health sector has been severely compromised due to the ongoing conflict, leading to a dramatic rise in untreated chronic illnesses. With over 10 million people lacking access to essential medical services, the situation has escalated into a full-blown humanitarian disaster. Hospitals and clinics are overwhelmed, with many destroyed or rendered inoperable due to the fighting. The collapse of the health system has left millions vulnerable to diseases, including cholera, which thrives in such desperate conditions.

The cholera outbreak in Sudan is a stark reminder of the dire conditions faced by the population. Cholera, an acute diarrheal illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, spreads rapidly in areas with inadequate sanitation, unsafe drinking water, and overcrowded living conditions—conditions that are all too common in Sudan’s displaced communities.

The outbreak has already claimed lives, with thousands more at risk as the disease spreads through refugee camps, overcrowded cities, and rural areas. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of clean water, insufficient medical supplies, and a general breakdown in public health infrastructure.

UMR’s Response: Immediate Action and Long-Term Commitment

In response to this unfolding crisis, UMR (United Mission for Relief and Development) has stepped up its efforts to provide life-saving aid and support to those affected by the cholera outbreak. UMR’s presence in Sudan, backed by its partnerships with organizations in the USA, Sudan, Bahrain, Kenya, and Kuwait, is pivotal in addressing the immediate needs of the most vulnerable populations.

UMR has committed to providing 1.7 million meals to newly displaced families with malnourished children, or pregnant and lactating women. These meals are crucial for maintaining the health and strength of those who are most at risk of contracting diseases like cholera. UMR’s hot meals kitchen serves thousands of recently displaced people daily, offering a vital lifeline in these challenging times.

Recognizing the critical need for medical intervention, UMR has been providing medical treatment to thousands of Sudanese through open medical day services. These services

include visits to internally displaced people (IDPs) in schools, government buildings, and other makeshift shelters. Understanding Cholera: A Preventable Yet Deadly Disease

Cholera is a disease that can be prevented with proper sanitation, clean water, and timely medical treatment. However, in conflict zones like Sudan, where these basic necessities are scarce, the disease can spread rapidly, leading to high mortality rates. The symptoms of cholera include severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, which, if left untreated, can lead to death within hours.

The current cholera outbreak in Sudan is particularly alarming because it is occurring in the context of an already overwhelmed health system. The lack of medical supplies, clean water, and adequate sanitation facilities makes it extremely difficult to contain the outbreak and treat those who are infected.

UMR’s Role in Fighting the Cholera Outbreak

UMR is at the forefront of the battle against cholera in Sudan. The organization’s efforts are focused on three key areas:

Emergency Medical Response:

UMR will be supporting health facilities with essential supplies that can contribute to the treatment of cholera. This includes providing oral rehydration salts (ORS), intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and other necessary medical supplies to help manage and treat cholera patients effectively. These resources are crucial in ensuring that health facilities are equipped to handle outbreaks and provide timely care to those affected. Moreover, UMR is shipping 5 medical kits that will serve more than 50,000 persons in Sudan with a value of 5.5 million USD, and they are already in transit to arrive in Sudan later this month.

Community Health Education:

UMR understands that education is key to preventing the spread of cholera. The health project through community volunteers is conducting community health education campaigns to raise awareness about the disease and to teach people how to protect themselves and their families. These campaigns are being carried out in collaboration with local health workers, who are trained to identify cholera symptoms and to provide treatment and advice to those in need.

Online Donation:

Use the UMR sudan-emergency 2024 page to donate online. This method is quick, secure, and allows you to choose your donation amount.

The Importance of Global Support

While UMR is doing everything in its power to combat the cholera outbreak in Sudan, the organization cannot do it alone. The scale of the crisis requires a coordinated global response, with support from governments, international organizations, and individual donors.

UMR is calling on the global community to help fund its efforts to save lives in Sudan. Donations are urgently needed to provide medical supplies, clean water, and food to those affected by the cholera outbreak. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference in the fight against this deadly disease.

How You Can Help

Donate:

Your financial contribution can help provide life-saving medical treatment, clean water, and food to those in need. Donations can be made directly through UMR’s website, and all funds will go towards supporting UMR’s emergency response efforts in Sudan.

Spread the Word:

Raising awareness about the cholera outbreak in Sudan is crucial. Share information about the crisis and UMR’s response on social media, with your friends and family, and within your community. The more people who know about the situation, the more support UMR can generate.

Conclusion

The cholera outbreak in Sudan is a stark reminder of the devastating impact that conflict and instability can have on public health. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the need for urgent action is clear. UMR is ready to battle the cholera outbreak and to provide life-saving assistance to those in need, but they cannot do it alone. The global community must come together to support UMR’s efforts and to help save lives in Sudan.

By working together, we can make a difference in the fight against cholera and ensure that the people of Sudan receive the help they desperately need. Now is the time to act. Help us save Sudan!

Imagine being forced to flee your home as a refugee, leaving behind everything you know and love. For 7.1 million Sudanese, including a heartbreaking 3.3 million children, this nightmare is their reality. The ongoing conflict has torn families apart and displaced more refugees in Sudan than any other country in the world.

7.1 million people, including an estimated 3.3 million children, are now internally displaced from their homes across Sudan. But the suffering doesn’t end there. Over 9 million children in Sudan—just under 50% of all children in the country—are facing severe food shortages due to conflict disrupting agriculture.

In the face of such devastation, it’s easy to feel helpless. But there is hope. By coming together as a global community, we can support Sudan refugees and provide life-saving aid. In this article, we’ll explore ways you can make a real difference for the millions of Sudan refugees struggling to survive this humanitarian crisis.

How to Help Sudan Refugees?

Be a part of saving lives. Donate today to UMR

1. Donate to Sudan Refugees

One of the most direct ways to assist Sudan refugees is through monetary donations. Your financial support enables organizations like UMR to provide food, shelter, and medical care to those affected by the Sudan crisis. Even a small donation can make a big difference.

2. Donate Supplies to Sudan Refugees

Essential supplies such as clothing, food, and medical items are urgently needed. UMR’s Sudan Emergency Campaign provides a platform where you can donate these supplies directly. Items like blankets, tents, and hygiene kits are also needed.

3. Food Donations for Sudan Refugees:

Many Sudanese refugees are suffering from hunger. Violent conflicts have forced almost 8 million people to leave their homes, creating a serious food crisis. Around 25 million people in Sudan need help, and nearly 18 million of them do not have enough food.

UMR is working towards the goal of providing 1,000,000 meals to sudan refugees. You can help us reach the goal by donating to UMR’s Sudan food campaign. These donations can help fill the empty stomachs of thousands of Sudanese and improve the health of refugee campers.

Sudan has also faced extreme weather like floods and droughts, which have destroyed crops and livestock, making the food shortage even worse. Many families have lost their homes and their way of making a living, leading to severe hunger and malnutrition.

When you donate food, UMR ensures it goes to the people who need it the most. Your contribution can help bring relief to those struggling with hunger and give them hope for a better future. Simple acts of kindness, like donating food, can have a huge impact on the lives of Sudanese refugees.

Please consider helping by donating food items. Your support can help provide essential meals and make a real difference in the lives of those suffering from hunger and displacement. Together, we can help alleviate this crisis and bring much-needed relief to those in need.

4. Medical Supplies for Sudan Refugees

Access to medical care is limited for Sudan refugees. Donations of medical supplies, including first aid kits, medicines, and surgical equipment, can save lives. For years, UMR has provided essential medical shipments to Sudan. UMR delivers critical medical aid to displaced people in Sudan. UMR also provides blankets, tents, and hygiene kits to Sudan refugees. Our goal is to enhance the overall healthcare system of this country. Donate to today to save lives!

7. Spread Awareness

Raising awareness about the crisis of Sudan refugees is another crucial way to help. Share information about UMR’s Sudan Emergency Campaign on social media, organize community events, or write to your local representatives to advocate for increased support.

South Sudan food crisis in 2023 is becoming more devastating day by day. There are widespread food shortages, hunger, and rising rates of malnutrition in the country. We cannot emphasize enough how important this is because so many lives depend on it. This article sheds light on the critical state of South Sudan’s food crisis and how to help the people there.

Understanding the Food Crisis

South Sudan has had problems for a long time, like

  • Wars
  • Government Instability, and
  • Environmental Problems.

These things lead the country to chronic food insecurity. But the food crisis in 2023 has reached alarming proportions. Widespread drought made it hard for farmers to work. Ongoing armed battles have made it hard for the country to access food from outside. Because of this terrible situation, millions of South Sudanese people are in a state of vulnerability and desperation.

The Escalating Food Shortage and Famine

South Sudan is in a humanitarian catastrophe because there is a food shortage. Families all over the country are having a hard time finding enough food to eat, even one meal a day. The situation has worsened to the extent that famine threatens the lives of countless individuals. Famine is a state where hunger and starvation lead to widespread death.

Malnutrition rates are also going up rapidly because people can’t get enough food. This poses long-term health risks and threatens the overall health of the community.

UMR’s Contribution

In the middle of this huge disaster, UMR has been working hard on the ground to help the people of South Sudan. UMR has sent out emergency relief teams to help with things like food, clean water, and medical care. This is because they know how big and urgent the food situation is. UMR’s work in South Sudan shows that its main goal is to help people in need.

But UMR’s work depends on the kindness and help of people all over the world. Donations are a key part of UMR’s ability to do its important job in South Sudan and other places. By Giving to UMR’s aid efforts, you can make a real difference in the lives of those in South Sudan who are suffering from the food crisis.

Conclusion

The South Sudan food crisis in 2023 demands immediate attention and concerted efforts from the international community. The widespread food shortage, famine, and escalating malnutrition rates have placed millions of lives at risk. In this challenging time, UMR has emerged as a beacon of hope, working tirelessly to provide critical assistance to those affected. However, sustaining these efforts requires ongoing support through donations. Together, we can help alleviate the suffering and bring hope to the resilient people of South Sudan as they navigate this grave food crisis.

A country that has encountered countless obstacles to peace and prosperity is located in the center of Africa. The world’s smallest nation is South Sudan. But a protracted, horrible civil war tore it apart. Millions of people’s lives have been impacted by this battle. The South Sudan Civil War serves as a vivid reminder of how difficult. And convoluted the process of creating a nation is.

Since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan has had to contend with internal conflict, political power struggles, racial tensions, and the harsh reality of a faltering economy. The initial hope that accompanied its split has been replaced by a gloomy cloud of violence and humanitarian catastrophes. Anyone wanting to comprehend the complex dynamics at play in this volatile region must understand the causes, impacts, and potential solutions of the South Sudan Civil War.

The South Sudan Civil War will be covered in this blog. Let’s explore the complexities of this war to comprehend it better and advance our cause of South Sudanese peace, justice, and stability.

South Sudan Civil War

Just two years after South Sudan gained independence from Sudan. A devastating civil conflict known as the South Sudan Conflict broke out in December 2013. President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar’s fight over who would be in control started the violence, but it swiftly expanded into a wider race strife.

The Dinka, who primarily support President Kiir, and the Nuer, who support Riek Machar, are the two main ethnic groupings engaged in the conflict. Millions of people have had to relocate as a result of the conflict, which has resulted in significant bloodshed and violations of human rights.

Terrible things have happened during the war. Both the administration and the opposition have been accused of committing human rights violations.

Due to the war, millions of people are experiencing food insecurity, hunger, and restricted access to vital services like healthcare. Due to the large number of refugees, the war has also put a lot of strain on other nations.

A complex web of political, ethnic, and socioeconomic pressures that prevent the nation from progressing toward peace and stability is the root cause of the South Sudan Conflict. It’s crucial to address the root causes of the violence and promote communication if we want the peace to stay and for South Sudanese to have a better future.

Humanitarian

A severe humanitarian disaster has resulted from the South Sudanese civil war. Violence has injured and forced millions of people to relocate. The war has impacted the civilian population since it began in 2013, leaving them helpless and vulnerable.

Millions of people have been compelled to from their homes in search of safety as a result of the war. Many have attempted to take safety in overcrowded refugee camps or have crossed into neighboring nations. These refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) endure appalling living conditions. because they lack adequate housing, access to healthcare, clean water, and toilets.

Food insecurity and malnutrition have gotten worse as a result. Of violence and turmoil making it difficult to cultivate and make a life. The UN has repeatedly issued warnings that there may be starvation as a result of the lack of food for many people. People have difficulty receiving the care they require when medical facilities are damaged or destroyed, depriving communities of vital services.

Humanitarian organizations like UMR have been working hard to safeguard those. Who have been injured by the violence and preserve lives. They provide nutritional assistance, immediate medical attention. Clean water, and sanitary facilities to the most vulnerable individuals, including mothers, children, and the elderly. However, the scope of the issue and the persistent lack of safety make it challenging to reach those in need of assistance.

Emergency Crisis in Sudan

A complicated political and humanitarian catastrophe was affecting South Sudan. There have been ongoing efforts to end the issue, including mediation efforts by regional and international actors. The most recent peace accord, the Revitalised Agreement for the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS). Was signed in September 2018. A transitional government and election preparation were the goals of the agreement, but difficulties with execution have slowed progress.

In several regions of the nation, occasional bloodshed and battles between armed factions have persisted despite the peace agreement. Access to essential services like healthcare and education is still restricted in many places, and the security situation is still precarious.

very year Muslims around the world observe the holy month of Ramadan by fasting from sunrise to sunset. Unfortunately for hundreds of thousands of families, they will not get the chance to spend this spiritual time in a warm home with nutritious food to break their fast. UMR has launched “Pass the Plate” campaign to support them.

“The number of people fleeing war, persecution and conflict exceeded 70 million globally last year – the highest number in the UN refugee agency’s almost 70 years of operations.”UN

Refugees and displaced people are the most vulnerable people on the planet, suffering daily without sufficient housing, access to medicine, doctors, food, or clean water. As the crisis worsens, more and more people are depending on humanitarian agencies like UMR to fill the gaps.

Each year during Ramadan, UMR delivers food packages filled with nutritious items such as beans, rice, flour, oil, canned goods, and more to reach people that have absolutely nothing. We have spoken with families begging for help, telling our field staff that without these resources, they will die.

“Me and my children are fasting. What will we eat to break our fast? My children are begging me for food and water!”

This Ramadan, these families desperately need your help. Please #PassThePlate to a child in need!

Earlier last month, UMR sent a group of physicians to hospitals and medical clinics in Sudan to educate women about preventative care for breast cancer, treatments, and more. Additionally, during this workshop, the doctors offered screenings for anyone who wished to receive one.

The post Breast Cancer Screenings appeared first on UMR.

]]>
One of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women is breast cancer. In particular, this applies to African women. The African Women’s Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA) is a non-profit organization. It serves its purpose of educating immigrant African women about breast cancer. Through breast cancer screenings, they also strive to catch it early.

About AWCAA

In 2004, a group of African immigrant women who work in health care formed AWCAA. Their goal is to help African immigrants with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. This group helps to get more information, help with prevention, and access to health care.

Many African women can receive breast cancer screenings because of AWCAA. The group has worked with medical professionals and hospitals. Their mission is to deliver screenings and breast cancer education. Additionally, they offer indigent women free ultrasounds, clinical breast exams, and mammograms.

Importance of Early Detection

It is impossible to stress the significance of early identification. Because breast cancer is very curable when found early. But a lot of women in African nations are unaware of breast cancer warning signs and symptoms. And most of them do not have access to screening facilities. AWCAA seeks to reduce this problem by offering access to screening services.

Early-stage breast cancer cases have been successfully identified by the AWCAA’s screening program. It allows for more effective treatment. In addition, the charity provides counseling and access to healthcare for breast cancer.

Assistance from UMR

UMR joined forces with the AWCAA and has been taking part in medical programs in Sudan. Our aim is to raise awareness and give medical care.

At the beginning of last month, UMR sent a group of doctors to hospitals and clinics in Sudan. They taught women about breast cancer prevention, treatments, and more. Also, anyone who wanted a screening could get one from the doctors at this clinic.

Conclusion

AWCAA is a breast cancer screening organization. It also engages in advocacy and research. The group works to educate people about breast cancer. Also, they promote improved resources and access to healthcare for women. UMR partnered with them on many projects for their noble targets.

Breast cancer is a severe public health concern for many women. But it can heal by early identification. Groups like the AWCAA and UMR are essential in supporting this cause. We save lives by giving them access to breast cancer screenings and support.

In January 2021, UMR sent two major medical supplies to Lebanon. An international emergency health kit was the first. It was filled with necessary medical supplies. ICU beds were in the second shipment.

The pandemic hurt public hospitals the most. Because private institutions were cutting off so many people. But public hospitals already had very little money. We hoped these shipments would help the medical staff do their jobs better during this hard time.

Jordan

UMR is working with a field office in Jordan to send medical shipments to Syrian refugees. This is to help the number of refugees from Syria improve. We are delivering medicine to help both long-term and short-term health problems. We give basic medical tools. Syringes, aluminum canes, crutches, hip arthroscopy kits, oxygen masks, surgical packs, and more.

The governorates of Zarqa and Mafraq in Jordan have services to offer. In 2018, UMR and IMANA provided basic health care to 6,500 people. Most of them were Syrian and Palestinian refugees. We want to help at least 10,000 people this time in Jordan.

Sudan

Many health facilities in Sudan can not provide patients with proper care. Because they have insufficient medical equipment and supplies.

UMR has been delivering essential medical shipments to Sudan for many years. Our goal is to enhance the overall healthcare system of this country.

Yemen

The United Nations estimates that Yemen needs about $3.9 billion. This amount will aid the millions of people who are affected by the seven-year conflict.

According to Aljazeera, more than 15,000 people had to leave their homes in December 2021. Because the military war in Yemen is growing. More than 350 people were killed or hurt. The poorest country in the Arab world is now facing more hunger and an economic collapse.

UMR is still planning to help Yemen with emergency aid, like food and medical goods.

Palestine

According to Human Rights Watch, “Israeli officials destroyed 666 Palestinian homes and other buildings in the West Bank.” It happened for the first eight months of 2021. Bombs killed hundreds of people, hurt thousands and destroyed hospitals. Many of you stepped up to help Palestine get through this terrible time.

Because of your kindness, UMR sent 5 Interagency Emergency Health Kits (IEHK). We delivered them to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. It happened on December 26, 2021. These kits were sent to hospitals and medical centers all over the country.

The 5 IEHKs were able to help 50,000 people. They were full of things like trauma supplies, surgery tools, medicine, and more.

Conclusion

UMR has been providing medical shipments in many other countries along with these countries. We want to create a world where nobody will lose their life due to medical supplies shortage. We need all of your help to establish this dream. Join UMR with our sacred journey of giving medical care to the underprivileged people.
